Henry Morris Kemshead

Awarded with William James Lindsay (q.v.) the compensation for 15 enslaved people in Clarendon, Jamaica as trustee for Richard Augustus, Jamima and Janet Emma Clare, and appearing as an agent of 46 Lime Street in another award in St Andrew Jamaica. Given simply as Henry Kemshead in the compensation records, this is Henry Morris Kemshead of the Dhobah East India Sugar Company (estab. c.1836-7) (sugar manufacturers in India). The latter gave evidence to the Select Committee on Sugar and Coffee Planting. PP1847-48 (123) XXIII Pt. I, pp. 98-14. The company had some interest in the West Indies though was trying to move their capital out of there.

1. The will of Henry Morris Kemshead, formerly of 46 Lime Street but late of The Lodge Westbourne Park and of 2 East India Avenue who died 20 September 1878 proved 20/07/1879 by William James Lindsay of 2 East India Avenue merchant and Thomas Broadbent Cartwright solicitor, personal estate under £70,000 in the United Kingdom. He was aged 86 at death. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery in "a very fine Gothic mausoleum in the heart of the cemetery, at the intersection of Centre and Junction Avenues".

2. In 1851 Henry M Kemshead 'Magistrate of Middlesex' aged 56 was living at Westbourne, Paddington with mother Catherine as head of household aged 70 [sic] and sister Catherine aged 50.

3. Henry Morris Kemshead had been the attorney of the London merchant Robert Innes Grant in 1836, when he was apparently in Demerara and had forced the auction sale of Vreesen Hoop and the apprentices on it on behalf of Robert Innes Grant as mortgagee..
