Biography

Also appears as William Bartlett both in the compensation records (Grenada 958A&B; 995A&B; 991A&B) and in a number of other sources (e.g. Times 09/03/1839 p. 7 re his luncacy), but the registration of his second marriage (03/07/1834 to Jane Dorothea Milne, daughter of Alexander George Milne of Eltham) gives him as 'William Bartlet of Charlton widower'. Almost certainly connected with the earlier generation of mercantile partners of Alexander and William Bartlet (each of whom q.v.) in Grenada and Tobago.

  1. Commission of lunacy for him in 1839. Given as William Bartlett of Blackheath, 'in the prime of his life'.  'Served his country' in 1813, subsequently at Waterloo. In 1816 he 'entered into commercial pursuits', married 1830 but his wife died soon after. Then 1834 married daughter of Mr A. G. Milne 'a gentleman residing at Eltham', by whom he had two children, the second born March 1838, by which time he was displaying signs of madness. At that time he was in partnership  with his brother-in-law [given as George Alex. Milne junior, merchant of George Yard Lombard Street when he gave evidence) 'and he was in the habit of going repeatedly to London, although his presence was not required.'

  2. The children of his second marriage were both baptised at Lee, Kent England, (Jane Dorothea, born 06/01/1836 baptised 06/02/1836; and Margaret Barbara born 02/03/1838, baptised 04/04/1838).

  3. 03/05/1875: "Adminstration of the effects of Jane Dorothea Bartlet late of 2 St Paul's Place St Leonard-on-Sea Sussex who died 30 March 1875 at Eltham Kent granted to Jane Dorothea Bartlet and Margaret Barbara Bartlet both of 2 St Pauls Place daughters and only next of kin." Aged 68 at death, left effects of £12,000.
