Biography

Resident slave-owner, dying c. 1836.

  1. Will of John Allan of the Island of Antigua proved 03/01/1837. In his will he left his wife the interest for life in his personal estate, and left legacies of £1000 each to the four legitimate children of his brother David Allan (names as Ann; Louisa Peddie the wife of Dr Robert Peddie; John Allan and James Gordon Allan), to his sister Frances Henderson and his brother William Allan, as well as other monetary legacies. His residuary heirs were his nephews John and James Gordon Allan. A note at the foot of the will shows the appointment of Boddington, Davis and Boddington as administrators in England for the executors in Antigua.

Sources

Given as 'John Allen' in the Parliamentary Papers for Antigua no. 377 but as John Allan of St John's in the Register of Claims in T71/877. The other claims for 'John Allan' in Antigua have been linked in the database to the same man although they are not adjacent: for Antigua no. 75 (the Hope estate, an award made in June 1837) John Allan was also described as of St John's and Boddington, Davis and Boddington appear as his Administrators, which is consistent with what is known of John Allan's will; for Antigua no. 95 (Bendals, made in August 1837), Boddington Davis and Boddington again appears as administrators. These attributions of the claims to the same John Allan are therefore made with confidence. The attributions to the same John Allan of the claim for Cochrane's under Antigua no. 88 by 'John Allan of Antigua' as mortgagee and of the small award under Antigua no. 614 are probable but less certain.

  1. PROB 11/1871/1.
