Biography

  1. Possibly the same person as George Burrow, Mayor of Lancaster 1828, 1833, 1835/6.

  2. Owner of White Cross cotton mill in Lancaster, built in 1802 by Thomas Mason with the backing of Thomas Burrow, George's father. George Burrow took on the mill in 1827 with a partner, Thomas Housman Higgin. 1848 assignment by George Burrow of Lancaster of his estate to trustees for creditors; 1849 bankruptcy of former partner Richard Farrer of Burrow, Higgin, Farrer Cotton manufacturers.

  3. George Burrow appears among the Prisoners whose estates had been transferred to the Provisional Assignee and who were ordered to be brought up to the County Court of Lancashire on 09/11/1849, when he is described as 'formerly residing in Saint-Leonard Gate and having an office in Market Street, both in Lancaster...carrying on business in co-partnership with Thomas Burrow, Edward Burrow, and James Barton Nottage, as Merchants, under the firm of Burrows and Nottage, afterwards carrying on the same business in co-partnership with Thomas Burrow and James Barton Nottage, under the same firm, then with James Barton Nottage, and lastly alone under the firm of Burrow and Nottage, also carrying on business as Merchant on his sole and separate account a portion of the time in copartnership with Thomas Housman Higgin and Richard Farrer, carrying on business in Lancaster as aforesaid, as Cotton Spinners and Manufacturers, under the firm of T.H. Higgin and Company, Burrow and Higgin, and Burrow, Higgin and Farrer, and late a lodger in Saint Leonard-Gate, Lancaster aforesaid, out of business (sued as George Burrow, who has survived James Barton Nottage deceased.)   

  4. Life dates are derived from the 1861 census, with George Burrow JP [?] Boro Lancaster, retired West Indian merchant aged 70 living in Fenton Street Lancaster with wife Letitia aged 65; similarly 1851 census shows him at 5 Fenton Street with Letitia as magistrate and formerly West Indian merchant. Will of George Burrow of Lancaster who died 19/11/1861 proved 6 December 1861 by widow Letitia, effects under £6000. Letitia Higgin (11/05/1795-05/04/1864) (who married George Burrow in Lancaster 09/01/1817 1817) was the sister of Thomas Housman Higgin (1788-1861), Burrow's partner, and the daughter of 'the second John Higgin of Lancaster'.

  5. NB there is also a George Burrow of Lancaster whose death was registered Q1 1846 who in principle could have been the Mayor.
