Biography

Awarded with Michael Hinton Castle the compensation for the enslaved people on the Cascade and Palmiste estates in Trinidad, the former as assignees of the mortgagee in possession and the latter as owners-in-fee. These two estates were shown in an 1828 codicil to the will of Isaac Pickering (q.v.) to have been mortgaged to Philip & George Protheroe of Bristol, and it is possible that Castle and Cave had advanced credit to the Protheroes on the security of the latters' interest in these estates. Charles Cave also became the owner of St Nicholas Abbey in Barbados in 1834 through his marriage to Sarah Cumberbatch.

  1. Son of Stephen Cave of Cleve Hill and Anne Daniel, b. 1796. Began career as merchant with Thomas Daniel & Co. Appears later as London banker, a partner in Prescott, Grote, Ames & Co., later Prescott, Grote Cave & Cave, until his death.

  2. One of the Commissioners of the £500,000 British Guiana loan for immigration purposes.

  3. Will of Charles Cave formerly of 4 Mincing Lane and Cadogan Place but lately of 62 Threadneedle Street and 23 Lowndes Street, who died 10/6/1887, personal estate £613,900 11s 4d.

  4. The estates of St Nicholas Abbey and Ebworth in Barbados were held by Edward Carleton Cumberbatch (d. 1821) and John Trent Cumberbatch (d. 1822). Edward Carleton Cumberbatch's son of the same name (1795-1835) was disinherited under the terms of his father's will for marrying 'any daughter of Andrew Ash[e] of Bath, musician', and the estates passed to the daughter of Edward Carleton Cumberbatch (d. 1821), Sarah Cave. Sarah Cumberbatch had married Charles Cave 01/05/1818. The compensation for both estates appears under the name of Thomas Louis, the administrator of Lawrence Trent Cumberbatch (d. 1834), the surviving trustee under the will of Edward Carleton Cumberbatch (d. 1821).
