Biography

Appearing in the compensation records as William Byam, but later becoming Sir William Byam. Of Cedar Hill Antigua and of Westwood, near South Stoneham Southampton, President of Island Council, son of Edward Byam (1767-1795) and brother of Lt Gen. Edward Byam (b. c 1794); m. 1814 Martha daughter of Thomas Rogers. Awarded the compensation for Cedar Hill on Antigua as owner and for two more estates on Antigua as trustee and executor of Thomas Rogers (q.v.), his father-in-law. Very probably also the same William Byam acting as executor in Antigua no. 271.

  1. Veteran of the Peninsular War and of Waterloo. 'Cedar Hill, the seat of Martin [sic] Byam, with its long avenues of white cedars struck me as being a very delectable place; Byam was an Eton boy, and having fought through the Peninsula hung up his sword non sine gloria, retired to his patrimony and determined to live like a gentleman.'

  2. Will of Sir William Byam, knight who died 05/07/1869 at Westwood proved 09/09/1869, effects under £1000, double probate passed at the Principal Registry January 1873.
