Harry Hackshaw

Awarded the compensation for the Three Rivers estate on St Vincent, son of Thomas Hackshaw and Lydia Alexander.

1. Will of Harry Hackshaw of 47 Gloucester Place Portman Square Middlesex proved 28/11/1843. Administration of the will of Harry Hackshaw of Gloucester Place Portman Square but late of the island of St Vincent who died at St Vincent 01/03/1843, left unadministered by Harry Roche Hackshaw the son one of the executors, granted 10/06/1884 to Robert James Hackshaw, son of [=and?] one of the residuary legatees, personal estate £47 1s 3d. The will of a Thomas Hackshaw of the Island of St Vincent had been proved 03/05/1782. 

2. Baptisms of Harry Roche Hackshaw (10/03/1821 St Marylebone); Harriet Marian Hackshaw (08/04/1828 St Mary Bryanston Square); Georgina (16/09/1831 St Mary Bryanston Square), children of Harry and Harriet Marion Hackshaw. In addition, Robert James Hackshaw, son of Harry Hackshaw, married Elizabeth Jane Rowe at All Saints Notting Hill 13/01/1872; and his daughter  Lucy Campbell Hackshaw married Duncan Forbes Sutherland of Island of St Vincent 08/10/1836 at St Mary's Church, Marylebone (and secondly in Cape Town Sir John Hall KCB who died 1866: Hall is in the ODNB as military surgeon). 

3. Thomas Hackshaw (1745-1782) was born in England, from Hinton, St George, Somerset. He married Lydia Alexander on St Vincent 30/01/1772. He went during the American Revolution to seek land in British West Florida (he was granted 500 of the 1800 acres he sought), before returning to his wife and children on St Vincent and dying there 11/02/1782. Their children were Lydia (1773-?) who married Thomas Dakins/Dakyns; twins George and Thomas (1775-1775); and Harry Hackshaw, baptised 16/07/1774, who married Harriet Marion Mackay in St Vincent. Hackshaw had commissions in the Militia on St Vincent in 1806, 1814 and 1821, so was presumably resident on the island in those years.  Lydia Hackshaw née Alexander remarried, to Alexander Burrowes Irwin 04/08/1801 at St Pancras, had three more children (Harriet Frances; Henry Bury and Charlotte Martha, who married John Roche Dasent) and died 21/03/1836 and was buried at St Dunstan's-in-the-west Fleet Street.

4. Marriages "At Mary-le-bone Church, Harry Hackshaw, Esq. of the Island St Vincent, to Harriet Marrion; and Capt. M. J. Popplewell, Royal Navy, to Margaret Carr, both daughters the deceased George Mackay Esq. of Bighouse."

5. H. Hackshaw of Gloucester Place, Portman Square was listed as a subscriber to Charles Shephard's An Historical Account of the Island of Saint Vincent, published in 1832.
