Biography

Educated in England, resident in Barbados in the early 1830s but in Britain by 1841.

  1. Matriculated Exeter College Oxford 08/03/1826 aged 18, 1st son of Richard Clement of Barbados.

  2. By 1841, Hampden Clement aged 30 was living with Phillipa aged 25 and three children at 23 Wilton Crescent. In 1851 the family was living at Snarestone Lodge Leicestershire (Hampden Clement described as 'West India proprietor and Fundholder, aged 43) with Lady Alleyne and a widowed sister-in-law Rebecca Martin aged 33.

  3. The will of Hampden Clement of 20 Wilton Crescent who died 04/02/1880 was proved 12/03/1880 by Philippa Cobham Clement widow and relict, effects under £30,000. An earlier probate grant had been made in February 1880 by Reynold Alleyne Clement, Major in HM's Army, of Datchet Bucks., the son.

  4. Hampden Clement's son Reynold Alleyne Clement (1834-1905) was appointed Clerk of the Course at Ascot in 1885 and made 'vast improvements' to the course and stands. Although Reynold Alleyne Clement is shown as born at Snarestone Lodge c. 1834 in his Cambridge University Alumni entry (he matriculated at Trinity in 1853), the 1851 and 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses all show him as born in Barbados.
