Biography

Joint owner of Soufriere and Union estates in St Lucia (with Peter Muter). Slave compensation was also awarded for a group of enslaved people in St Lucia to the Barbados-based trustees under the marriage settlement of Michael and Mary Elizabeth [sic.] Jackson. Very likely the same person as Michael Jackson the awardee for Barbados Claim no. 1747 given there as 'of St Lucia.'

  1. Michael Jackson married Elizabeth Mary Garnett in St Michael, Barbados, 12/12/1816. The rector of St Michael at that time was Rev. William Garnett, who was also rector there when his daughter Elizabeth Mary Garnett was baptised 07/11/1801 (her date of birth was 10/10/1801).

  2. Michael Jackson, age 65, no occupation, born England, was living at 4 Portland Place, St Helier, Jersey, in the census of 1851, with his wife Eliz Mary, age 60, born Barbados, and two female servants. The age of both Jacksons was originally given as N[ot] K[nown], then erased and with 65 and 60 written above.

  3. The will of Michael Jackson of the Island of Jersey was proved 11/08/1855 names his wife and residuary legatee as Elizabeth Mary Garnett. Under the will, Jackson left his property to his three natural daughters, Catherine Jackson, Eleanor Ann Jackson, and Mary Ann Jackson, wife of Charles Wells of St Lucia. In a codicil he identified his property as including $22,000 in Pennsylvania bonds; a £500 London & Birmingham bond; and £500 'Dutch stock', all in the hands of Thomas Daniel & Co.
