George Joad

1764 - 27th Dec 1837

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

London ropemaker and shipping agent, who was awarded the compensation for several estates in Jamaica, as a result it appears of his mortgage lending to slave-owners, including the London merchants Plummer and Wilson and the descendants of the planter Thomas Kaylet (q.v).

  1. Identified as a creditor of the bankrupts John Plummer and William Wilson (each of whom q.v.), in an announcement calling creditors to meet with the Assignees to discuss a transaction and suit with Joad, concerning two estates - Anchovy Bottom and Mount Thirza [sic: Mount Zion in St Elizabeth appears in the compensation records to correspond to the details for 'Mount Thirza' in the London Gazette] - over which he held security. The compensation records show him as assignee of John Plummer, but it is clear that Joad was not himself an Assignee in the bankruptcy, but a creditor: his assignment must have predated Plummer's failure in 1830-1. Plummer lived in Blackheath, as did Joad.

  2. The will of the man in this entry [which has not been fully analysed] was proved 03/02/1838: it rehearses a marriage settlement of 1836 with Mrs Nottidge. Deaths of 'George Joad' are registered in Eastry Kent Q4 1837 and Q1 1838, as well as Q2 1847; George Joad 'Blackheath but died nr Deal' aged 73 was buried 05/01/1838 at St Mary Rotherhithe (the minister was William Curling); Mary Joad and Harriet Joad, daughters of George and Rebecca Joad, were baptised at St Mary Rotherhithe 27/05/1800 and 22/02/1805 respectively: the will appears to make no mention of them.

  3. Call for creditors, pursuant to Chancery suits of Joad versus Ripley and Joad versus Pearce, of George Joad late of Blackheath and of Walmer, who died 27/12/1837.

  4. Will of George Curling Joad [whose birth was registered Q4 1837 at Eastry] late of Oakfield in Surrey who died 24/10/1881 at Oakfield proved 01/12/1881 by Arthur Henty of Westerfield Worthing and Robert Curling 55 Princes Square Hyde Park the executors, personal estate £91,366 19s 5d.
