Biography

MP and son of John Glassford, a tobacco lord of Glasgow. The nature of his entanglement in Caribbean slavery is not entirely clear but Henry Glassford appears to have been a trustee of 'slave-property' in Jamaica later held by the mortgagees Robert Mackay & Co.: reportedly his involvement dated from c. 1790 and the statement of his affairs at death included a debt of £45,000 to Leitch & Smith arising from these estates.
