Biography

London stockbroker, participant in the market for annuities secured on property including enslaved people in the West Indies.

  1. In the will of Robert Willing stockbroker of South Lambeth [late of Upper Charlotte Street Rathbone Place and formerly of Salisbury Street] proved 30/09/1796, among other assets (including benefits from his 'membership' of the Equitable Society and Provisional Society) he left an annuity on the property of John Abel Ward (q.v.) of Nevis to his wife and then to his daughter Charlotte, wife of Richard Orlebar of Hinwick in Bedfordshire [This was an annuity of £100 p.a for the lives of himself, his wife Jane and daughter Charlotte purchased in 1774.]

  2. Katherine Short (q.v.) at 'Mr Waterhouses' [?] was among a group of 16 annuitants created in 1775 when each purchased an annuity from Jacob Kladen (q.v.) secured on Kladen's St Vincent property, including named enslaved people, to raise £11,000. She purchased an annuity of £50 p.a. in common with almost all the other subscribers, on the lives of herself and Robert Willing of the Stock Exchange.
