Heir under entail of his grandfather James Smith of Nevis (q.v.). The will of James Smith Baillie Lt.Col. of HM's 99th Regiment of Foot of Dochfour proved 16/02/1797 shows him as a grandson of Hugh Baillie and nephew of Evan Baillie (q.v.), and thus identifies him as the son of Alexander Baillie of Dochfour whom he predeceased. In the will he gives himself as 'younger': LBS has not yet determined why.
