Biography

  1. Duke, alias Nelson Bean, age 7, "Negro", "Creole", son of Chance, was listed on Sterling Estate in St Andrew, Jamaica, in the slave register of 1817. Venus, alias Chance Bean, age 27, "Negro", "African", was living on the same estate.

  2. Nelson Bean, "name given to dead man by coroner", of full age, "fell dead on the Cowley Road on leaving workhouse" and was buried in Cowley St John Cemetery, Oxford, 12/11/1881, age 69. A piece of street jewellery on the site of his death gives his name, date of death and a plan of the workhouse. He has not been identified in earlier censuses and nothing is known of how or when he came to Britain.
