Hon. Alexander Murray of Taplow

???? - 1778

Biography

Son of the late Alexander Lord Elibank and mortgagee of land [and enslaved people] in Tobago. He had lent £8000 in 1772 to George and Patrick Ferguson (each of whom q.v.) on an unnamed estate inferred by LBS to have been Castara; in 1773 a further £4000 was advanced by Robert Scott and the estate placed in trust. He has an entry in the ODNB as 'Jacobite agent.'

  1. Will of Hon. Alexander Murray of Taplow Bucks [undated but made before 1775] proved 05/03/1778. In the will he said that if he died before 1775 no interest should be paid on the £8000 he had lent to his nephews George and Patrick Ferguson on mortgage on their lands in Tobago, which he said he had intended to be interest-free for three years. He felt his estate to his nephew George Johnstone for life, and then to whichever of his brothers and their sons carried the title Lord Elibank, failing whom it was to be divided among his nieces and to George Johnstone's son, also George.
