Biography

Resident then absentee slave-owner on Jamaica. Almost certainly Jane Martin widow of Clifton Gloucestershire whose will was proved 18/02/1830. In that will, made in 1829, Jane Martin described herself as formerly of the island of Jamaica, and left 'all the negro and other slaves on the said island of Jamaica and elsewhere of or to which [sic] I am or shall at the time of my decease be any wise possessed of or entitled' and the proceeds of the sale of 'slaves' for which she had previously appointed an attorney, to her friend Sarah Fennell Scott (q.v.) of Clifton.
