John Ellis of Jamaica

???? - 1710

Biography

Will of John Ellis [late of the parish of St Katherine Jamaica but at present in the Kingdom] of Great Britain proved 13/03/1710 (NS). He left £1000 currency to his sister Ann at 21; £2000 to his daughter Mary on her marriage day and a further £1000 on the birth of her first child and similarly £2000 to his daughter Martha on marriage and £1000 on birth of her first child; and £500 to Abigail Demetrius (under the care of Francis March). He left his plantation and enslaved people in St Thomas-in-the-Vale to his son George together with a parcel of land recently bought of Mr Thomas Gray deceased at Cedar Mount in St Katherine; he then clarified that he owned 2/3rd of the St Thomas-in-the-Vale estate - which he at that point identified as Sixteen Mile Walk - and that he intended to buy the other 1/3rd for George: if he or his executors did not procure it successfully, then George was to receive also half of the testator's plantation and enslaved people at Caymans in St Katherine. He identified his aunt as Mrs Frances Nedham in London, to whose care he committed his daughter Mary. His residuary devisee was his eldest son John.
