Masterton Ure

3rd Apr 1777 - 10th Mar 1863

Biography

4th son of Rev. Robert Ure, minister of Airth, Stirling, and Anne, daughter of James Laurie of Burngrange. Never married. MP for Weymouth and identified as a 'West Indian' MP by Judd: the basis for this is not yet fully understood by LBS but he was 'the leading trustee of the estate of the late Sir John Lowther Johnstone of Westerhall, Dumfriesshire, and guardian of his son George Frederic Johnstone', in which capacity he appears in the Slave Registers for the Westerhall estate in Grenada. Thoroughly reactionary: opposed Catholic Emancipation, Jewish Emancipation, parliamentary reform and in favour of slavery: commenting on the West India Company bill in March 1825 he deprecated attacks on slavery. And also in March 1825 he voted against condemning the Jamaican slave trials.
