Biography

Henry Archbould junior was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 1000 acres of land in Clarendon. There is potential for confusion here among the three generations of Archbould active in Jamaica in the middle of the 18th century. Vere Langford Oliver shows a Henry Archbould (Member of Assembly 1741); a second Henry Archbould, son of the first, whose death-date Oliver gives as 1747 or possibly 1756; and Henry Archbould (bapt. 1741, d. 1805). The latter appears young to be recorded as owner of land in 1754, and accordingly LBS has entered him under Henry Archbould the youngest (q.v.).

  1. "In 1759 a private act was passed for the sale of certain lands in Liguanea, St. Andrew, belonging to Henry Archbould, a minor, son and heir, and residuary devisee of. Henry Archbould late of the said parish Esquire deceased for payment of £8,000, with interest devised by the will of said Henry Archbould to his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Archbould and for other the purposes therein mentioned." Henry Archbould the minor son and heir here appears to have been the man labelled 'Henry Archbould the youngest."

  2. Henry Archbould of St Andrew, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1761. Slave-ownership at probate: 150 of whom 60 were listed as male and 90 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £17880.97 Jamaican currency of which £6903 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £382.31 currency cash, £7019.21 currency debts and £280.75 currency plate.
