James Ord

???? - 1771


Biography

James Ord whose will was made in 1768 of St Andrew Holborn was the James Ord who had married Anne Petronilla daughter of Roger [in fact Richard] Elleson [sic] and widow of Ogle. He was the son of John Ord of Newcastle and uncle of John Ord MP for Mitchell (the son of his half-brother Thomas Ord).

  1. Will of James Ord of St Andrew Holborn proved 15/11/1771. In the will he gave a mourning ring to his 'brother' Roger Hope Elletson, and £100 to his 'negro man' Perin [?] to whom had previously given his freedom. He left two named pieces of art that have not been traced: to Roger Hope Elletson a 'conversation piece' by Davis, and to Mrs Susanna Thomas a drawing of her by Cowes [sp?]. He left £1500 in trust with his nephew John Ord of Lincolns Inn, son of his brother Robert, to support and educate James Vickers, son of James Vickers of Red Lyon Square. His residuary legatee was his nephew John Ord of Lincolns Inn (1729-1814) MP for Midhurst, Hastings and Wendover between 1774 and 1790.

  2. Owner of 130 acres and 43 enslaved people in St Andrew, Jamaica, in 1753. James Ord was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 106 acres of land in St Andrew.
