John Mackglashan (senior)

Slave-owner in Jamaica, dying at Bath 13/01/1825 aged 81; he has a tablet in Bath Abbey. The estates he mentioned in his will were returned together with Mullet Hall in the early 1830s.

1. Will of John Mackglashan of Bath (made 03/01/1825) proved 17/02/1825. In the will he left an annuity of £500 p.a. to his wife or £350 p.a. plus occupation of his house in Bath. He left his daughter (unnamed) an annuity of £187 10s p.a. owed to him by Bigoe Armstrong and £67 10s p.a. part of an annuity of £337 10s p.a. from Robert Malthus Payne, plus a further £50 p.a. (It seems that these annuities were in exchange for advances of £1500 and £2500 respectively). He left his moiety of two estates in Jamaica Mount Prospect (described as Mount Pleasant in a codicil) and Killicrankie in trust for his [unnamed] grandchildren, with contingent remainder to his daughter for life and then 1/3rd each to his nephews Charles Mackglashan and Robert Mackglashan and 1/3rd to the two children of his late niece Elizabeth Chalmers. If the estates and enslaved people were to be sold, he wished a distinct preference be given to his nephew Charles Mackglashan. In a codicil of the same date he directed the net produce of the estates to be paid to his daughter for her children.

2. The will of his widow Elizabeth proved 12/05/1830 shows their daughter as Charlotte Maria Elwin, wife of Fountain [sic] Elwin. His likely son, Thomas MackGlashan, died in a duel in 1811 and Thomas's wife and three children were all dead by 1825.

1. PROB 11/1695/266. Robert Malthus Payne was a goldsmith of Bath; Bigoe Armstrong was probably the army officer of that name who died in Boulogne in 1824, Burke's Commoners Vol. IV 'Armstrong of Garry Castle.'
