Elizabeth Rose (née Alexander)

In the will of Elizabeth Rose widow [formerly] of Bromley College Kent [afterwards of Upper Seymour Street Portman Square and late of Caroline Street Bedford Square] [made in 1821] proved 27/03/1824 (which identified her as the widow of the Rev. Charles Rose of Graffham in Sussex), she remarked on the 'large property' to which she was entitled as the residuary legatee of William Alexander, and left £8000 in trust for the benefit of Bromley College (where she had lived for 22 years). She left £3000 to Mrs Louisa Stratton wife of Robert Stratton surgeon of Berners Street and £1000 to each of their two children. She also made a large number of smaller monetary legacies to friends and servants, to which she added in a series of codicils.

PROB 11/1683/307. It is possible that her husband Rev. Charles Rose of Graffham (who died c. 1764, 60 years before the death of his widow) was the Rev. Dr Charles Rose, shown as the owner of 53 enslaved people on the estate of Slingsby Bethell in Antigua in 1753, https://www.maggs.com/media/3365247/slavery.pdf [accessed 02/08/2021]; the commentary on this site shows a clergyman named Charles Rose in Antigua in 1732.
