Biography

Hugh Giddy Peake and Edward Chubb were co-owners of St Charles estate in Trinidad in 1834.

  1. The baptism of Hugh Giddy Peake was recorded at Kenwyn Cornwall 27/08/1787 and the death of Hugh Giddy Peake was recorded at Truro in Q3 1863. Given the unusual name these were almost certainly connected. In 1851 a Lewis Peake accountant born Trinidad aged 33 was living at No. 17 Paul's Row Truro with his family including a son Hugh G. Peake; in 1861 Lewis Peake was shown as born Cornwall Solicitors general clerk, again with a son Hugh G. Peake. LBS' inference is that there were three generations: Hugh Giddy Peake of Trinidad, his son Lewis and Lewis's son Hugh G.

  2. There may in fact be an earlier generation; there are suggestions that an earlier Hugh Giddy Peake died at some point in the early 1830s. In the slave registry of 1834, Samuel Greenidge registered one enslaved person, Bannatyne Maycock, "being the property of the creditors of the late Hugh Giddy Peake, whereof this Saml Greenidge is in possession as synoic[?] of the sd. creditors."
