Slave-owner in Jamaica, returning to Scotland and buying the Hillbank estate in Forfarshire. Three of his sons became East India Co. men, one of them Thomas Alexander Wise (1802-1889) a notable benefactor of the University College Dundee, to which he gave his paintings and objets: the BL also also a series of drawing of Tibet owned by Thomas Alexander Wise sometimes described as the 'Wise Collection'. Thomas Wise Place in Dundee is presumably named after the elder Thomas Wise.
