Biography

Son of John Cope 'of Strathbogie' (q.v., under John Cope senior). In his early twenties when he married Mary (Molly) Dorrill, natural daughter of William Dorrill of Salt River in 1753. Inherited Egypt and Paradise estates in Westmoreland from his father-in-law in 1754. Eight children born to John and Mary and baptised in Westmoreland between 1757 and 1773. He was the employer of Thomas Thistlewood (q.v.). He sold Egypt in 1784 for £8,300 according to Trevor Burnard.
