Biography

Slave-owner in Jamaica, dying at his London home in 1770. David Olyphant had claimed the title of 12th Lord Olyphant in 1751.

  1. Will of Rt Hon. David [Lord Olyphant] Baron Olyphant [of Scotland] [made in 1763] proved 27/11/1770. He left his property in trust to Beeston Long and George Drake, with his house in Great Pulteney Street Middlesex going to his housekeeper Ann Stanno for life. He left his [unnamed] estates and enslaved people in Jamaica to his wife for life, then his nephew David Olyphant of South Carolina and then to the latter's son William. In a codicil he made null and void his legacy to William and instead left the estate to John Paterson, son of his niece Elizabeth and her husband James Paterson.

  2. David Lord Olyphant of Britain, peer. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1772. Slave-ownership at probate: 85 of whom 42 were listed as male and 43 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £15625 Jamaican currency of which £3338.75 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £11773 currency debts and £0 currency plate.
