William Coppell

???? - 1789

Biography

Merchant in Jamaica, partner with his brother-in-law Thomas Goldwin (q.v.) with whom he reportedly co-owned estates and enslaved people c. 1781-1785, including Mullet Hall in Clarendon. The firms of Coppell and Aspinall and Coppell and Goldwin in which William Coppell was a partner were major slave factors in Jamaica. Coppell's daughter and heir Elizabeth Anne married Rev. George Burrard (reportedly bringing £30,000 to the marriage): their son (and William Coppell's grandson) was George Burrard, MP for Leamington 1828-1832.
