Biography

Slave-owner in Jamaica. James Woodcock was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 1148 acres of land in Westmoreland.

  1. Will of James Woodcock [late of the island of Jamaica and formerly] of Hatton Garden [but now residing at French Hay [sic] Gloucestershire] [made in 1750] proved 10/05/1754. He rewrote the original will, which left his estates in Jamaica identified as Delve and Wilderness in Westmoreland in trust for his daughter Dorothy subject to an annuity of £200 p.a. to his wife Margaret, in 1751 after the birth of his son James, to whom he left his estates and enslaved people; and added provision for a third child with whom his wife was then pregnant late in the same year. He identified John Woodcock of Jamaica as his nephew and Nathan Sprigg as his partner.
