Biography

MP for Southampton 1747-1760, 'a member of a good Bristol merchant family.'

  1. Adm. Fell.-Com. (age 16) at PETERHOUSE, Nov. 7, 1741. Of Jamaica. Doubtless s. of Anthony, of Jamaica, Esq. School, Winchester. Matric. 1741. M.P. for Southampton, 1747-60. Married Arabella, dau. of Sir John Astley, of Patshull, Staffs., Bart. Died Feb. 26, 1760, in Jamaica. Buried at St Andrew's, Jamaica. M.I. Will, P.C.C. (G. Mag.; T. A. Walker, 279; Laurence Archer, Mon. in the West Indies.)

  2. Anthony Langly Swymner was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 4016 acres of land in St Thomas-in-the-East, 900 acres in St Elizabeth and 3362 acres in Clarendon, total 8278 acres.

  3. Will of Anthony Langley Swymmer of Mold Flintshire proved 03/04/1760. In the will he outlined his Jamaica holdings as Nutt's River of 2036 and 1/2 acres; Clarke's River, also in St Thomas-in-the-East of 1120 acres; a parcel of 332 acres of land bought of Richard Risby adjoining Nutt's River; 4000 [sic] acres at Milk River in Vere called Swymmer's Land or Milk River Land; a parcel of about 1100 acres of land in St George's; and land in Spanish town near the beef market. The property was subject to an annuity of £60 p.a. to Rev. Thomas Horne for the life of Thomas Rowney of Bristol; to an annuity of £300 p.a. to Hon. George Bennett; and to a mortgage of £4000, and as additional security for a further £4000 secured on the Mold estate, to Henry Swymmer of Bristol. He charged further annuities on the property and explicitly on enslaved people on the lands, of £200 p.a. to Hester Macartney a single woman lately residing with me at Ashford in Middlesex; £200 p.a. to his friend Thomas Felton; and subject to his other debts, of £400 p.a. to his wife Arabella. He left the estate thus indebted, with additional legacies of £5000 to his niece Sarah Champneys and £200 p.a. to Henry Swymmer of Bristol, in entail to his nephew Thomas Champneys, together with the Flintshire estate subject to his [the testator's] wife's life-interest.
