Biography

Of Limerick, probably son-in-law of Samuel Adams (q.v.), from whom River Head (St David), which had belonged to Samuel Adams, descended: it was registered to James Godsell 1786-1787. The Tharp papers also reportedly record a connection (its precise nature unclear) between James Godsell of Limerick and another estate that had belonged to Samuel Adams, Nutfield. The artist James Godsell Middleton (c. 1805-1874) was presumably a namesake of this man.

  1. Marriage of James Godsell to Miss Adams, 'of London' in December 1763.
