Biography

Master of Magdalene College Cambridge 1760-1774, and husband of Mary Sandby nee Acres. Signatory with his wife and others as lessors of a lease on the Tryall estate and the enslaved people attached to it in Jamaica in 1762.

  1. M.A. 1760, incorp. from Oxford; D.D. 1760. [S. of the Rev. Josiah (1689), Preb. of Worcester.] Matric. from Merton College, Oxford, Apr. 5, 1734, age 17; B.A. (Oxford) 1737; M.A. (Oxford) 1740. Master of Magdalene College, 1760-74. Vice-Chancellor, 1760-1. R. of Denton, Norfolk, 1750-1807 and R. of Skeyton. Chancellor of the diocese of Norwich, 1768. Died Mar. 24, 1807, aged 90, at Denton. (Al. Oxon.; G. Mag., 1807, I. 487.)

  2. Will of Rev. George Sandby Doctor of Divinity, Chancellor of the diocese of Norwich, proved 27/05/1807. He left monetary legacies (including consoles and naval stock) of some £6000 each to his daughters Elizabeth and Mary, as well as his leasehold house in Norwich. He left his estate at Denton to his son Rev. George Sandby (q.v.). The will is silent on property in Jamaica, implying that that an interest in the Tryall estate was settled on his wife for life and to their children after her death.
