Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica. Father-in-law of Charles James Sholto Douglas and although reportedly also father-in-law of the latter's son James Sholto Douglas (q.v.), the father of James Sholto Douglas's wife must have in fact been a second James Dawes of Rockspring. James Dawes's daughter Basilia Dawes had first married Richard Quarrell, who d. c. 1751.

James Dawes was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 681 acres of land in Westmoreland.
