Dulcibella Dodwell (née Kent)

1711 - 1793

Biography

Co-owner of Morant as one of the 'Misses Kent'. Daughter and co-heiress of Charles Kent (q.v.) of London.

  1. Will of Dulcibella Dodwell widow of Golden Square London proved 04/04/1793. Under the will she left £50 p.a to her daughters Dulcibella and Susanna, and her estates in Jamaica to her son Edward Dodwell. Edward Dodwell's will made in 1822 is silent on Jamaica property but Sir Alexander Crichton (q.v.), who had married Edward Dodwell's daughter, was awarded 1/6th of the compensation for the enslaved people on Morant in the 1830s.

  2. Dulcibella Dodwell's husband was Henry Dodwell, who in his will proved 06/02/1784 said that it was understood that Dulcilbella's Jamaica property would revert to her on his death, but to make sure he bequeathed them to her specifically. He has an entry in the ODNB as 'religious controversialist and barrister' that makes no reference to his wife or their family.

  3. There is also an entry in the ODNB for Dulcibella Dodwell's grandson Edward Dodwell as 'traveller and archaeologist.' The entry (which gives her as Dulcabella) describes Henry Dodwell as a London businessman.
