Biography

Will of James Scarlett of Halstead Essex [made in 1801] proved 24/04/1807. Under the will he left all debts due to him in Jamaica to his son John Scarlett of St Ann Jamaica and forgave John's indebtedness to him, including a mortgage on John's estate called Spring Garden in St Ann's. He said that before he left Jamaica he had by a deed of 20/07/1796 conveyed to his son James the younger, since deceased, his estate called Peru, subject to the payment of portions to his [James the younger's] siblings, which were to lapse with the death of the respective sibling. Two of them, Robert and Mary, had died and James Scarlett instructed that the £4000 currency intended for Mary be paid to John and transmitted to his [James'] executors in England, to invest £2000 each on behalf of his daughters Charlotte Simpson wife of Thomas Simpson of Braintree in Essex and Ann Scarlett spinster, and the £6000 intended for Robert be divided £2000 to John and £4000 to another son, Charles, still in Jamaica (the portions of £4000 each for his surviving daughters were confirmed later in the will). His wife Jane had chosen to live apart from him and he replaced an annuity of £800 p.a. to her with an annuity of £300 p.a. and gave her the use of his house at Halstead for life, then to his daughter Ann Scarlett and then to his daughter Elizabeth Jennings wife of Francis Jennings of Frodsham in Cheshire. He had £14,600 in the 3% consols and £14,300 in the 4% consols, the interest on which he left to his daughters Charlotte Simpson and Ann Scarlett for life, and then to the heirs. He identified his merchants as Richard Walker of Liverpool. He made his nephew James Scarlett of Guilford Street London Barrister one of his executors. In a codicil of 1805 he left Tey [?] House Farm in the parish of Marks Tey Essex which he had recently purchased to his daughter Elizabeth Jennings. In two other codicils he diverted some of the interest on the consols to his daughter Elizabeth and to grandchildren; and he ordered John Scarlett to remit £1000 from the sale of a house in Jamaica to England for Elizabeth, then referred to as Elizabeth Neale.
