Biography

Will of Margaret Eleanor Alpress widow of Bath [but now in London] proved 07/04/1797. By indentures of 29 & 30/11/1791, she said, Caswell Hill was conveyed to Thomas Townsend and Robert Cooper Lee to raise £2000 for her with interest at 5% p.a. should she live until 1798, or to her executors if she died before that. Of the £2000 she left £100 each to her grandsons Samuel Osborn and Kean Osborn.
Margaret Aikenhead married Samuel Alpress in St Andrew, Jamaica, 27/01/1761. They had three daughters baptised in Jamaica: Elizabeth (1761 in St Catherine, presumably who died an infant), Elizabeth (1762 in Vere) and Jane (1763 in Vere, again, who had presumably died by 1771). Another daughter, Jane Eleanor, was born and baptised in Westminster in 1771. A further daughter, Milborough, died in 1803. Elizabeth married Kean Osborn in 1780; Milborough married Richard Crewe; and Jane Eleanor married Richard Bulkeley.

Margaret Eleanor Alpress of the City of Bath in the County of Somerset widow but now in London.

Indentures dated 29 and 30/11/1791 conveyed Caswell Hill sugar plantation in Vere, Jamaica, to the use of Samuel Townsend and Robert Cooper Lee for 1,000 years upon trust subject to an annuity of £2,000 sterling per annum to me for life and the sum of £2,000 to my executors on my decease. The said sum of £2,000 I direct to be raised and given to my executors.

To my grandsons Samuel Osborn and Kean Osborn £100 each.

To my daughter Elizabeth Osborn, wife of Kean Osborn my silver christening bowl.

To my daughter Milborough Crewe, wife of Richard Crewe my silver epergne.

To my daughter Jane Eleanor Bulkeley, wife of Richard Bulkeley three mahogany cases with silver locks and handles, the two larger cases [with details of silver cutlery etc inside the cases].

To my sister Elizabeth Townsend, my large square silver tea board.

To my sister Milborough McLean a large silver saucepan and cover.

To my niece Elizabeth Trelawny Townsend my silver tea pot.

To my nephew Samuel [?] Townsend £100.

To Doctor Brown, my physician at Bath £100 for mourning.

To my woman servant Susanna Tomlinson £10.

To Mary Collins, housekeeper to my sister Elizabeth Townsend £10.

To my mulatto woman named Mary Bremmer, my negro woman named Rose Johnston and Eleanor Aikenhead and my negro man named James Knight, all in Jamaica, £10 each.

All rest and residue to my daughter Jane Eleanor Bulkeley for her own use and benefit.

My son-in-law Richard Bulkeley to be sole executor.

Proved in London 17/04/1797 by Richard Bulkeley. To my dear friend Mary Stern a small silver saucepan used for cream.

To daughter Elizabeth Osborn my diamond necklace and ear rings, one large diamond pin and her father's picture set round with diamonds.

To my daughter Jane Eleanor Bulkeley my two next sized diamond pins and six smaller ones, my diamond pin with her father's hair and a smaller diamond pin with hair in it, and my rose diamond ring.

To my god-daughter Elizabeth Reeve[?] Wilhelmina Pringle my hoop diamond ring.

To my said daughter Jane Eleanor Bulkeley all my wearing apparel, linen, laces, household linen and china and glass.

To my sister Elizabeth Townsend £100.

To my sister Milborough McLean £100.

To my grand-daughter Frances Osborn £50.

To my grand-daughter Emma Crewe £50.
