Thomas Rawlinson

From a Lancaster Quaker family; the heirs of Thomas Rawlinson were shown as owners of Broom Hall in British Guiana. Business partner of Thomas Bond (q.v.), a trustee under Rawlinson's will [dated 14/10/1802] in which Bond was described with his co-trustees John Proctor (q.v.) and William Sanderson (all merchants of Lancaster) as Rawlinson's 'good friends'. In the will Rawlinson instructed his trustees to sell his land at Yealand Conyers in the county of Lancaster and at Burton-in-Kendal in the county of Westmoreland, and his estates and shares in estates in St Vincent and Grenada and all the estates conveyed to him by way of mortgage in St Vincent, Grenada, Berbice [?] and Demerara, for the benefit of his children share and share alike, with the proviso that his eldest son Abraham Rawlinson should receive £1000 more than any other of his children.

1. Thomas Rawlinson and Thomas Bond of the town of Lancaster borrowed £10,000 from the British government under the Grenada and St Vincent loans scheme in 1796: a single repayment of £3333 6s 8d was recorded in January 1799, but the rest of the loan appears eventually to have been repaid.

2. Thomas Rawlinson's son and co-heir Abraham Rawlinson (d. 1829) was a banker, a partner in Gurneys, Birkbeck and Rawlinson of Fakenham Norfolk, a predecessor of Barclays.
