Quintin Crawford or Craufurd

Biography

Variously given as Quintin, Quinton, Quentin and Quinlan. Owner of Gayle estate in St Mary, Jamaica, from at least 1800 to 1817 (probably until his death in 1819).

Tentatively identifed as Quintin Crauford (1743-1819), brother of Sir Alexander Craufurd (q.v.). Born 22/09/1743 and baptised 01/10/1743 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland, son of Quintin Craufurd of Newark and Ann Robison "his Lady". Made his fortune in the East India Company and returned to Europe in 1780. Friend of Marie Antoinette, spent his time in Paris from 1783 onwards collecting books and pictures. Attempted to aid the escape of the royal family during the French Revolution. Returned to Paris in 1802 where he was joined by four of the sons of his brother Alexander.

Author of several works of history and antiquary including The History, Religion, Learning and Manners of the Hindus (1790), Secret History of the King of France and his Escape from Paris (first published 1885), Notice sur Marie Antoinette (1809).
