Anthony Malcom

???? - 1765

Biography

Given as of Basseterre, island of Grenada, an early purchaser with London partners John Mill and William Tod of three cotton estates on Carriacou, probably including Dumfries and Laurieston.

  1. Will of Anthony Malcom [sic], merchant in Basseterre in the island of Grenada [made in 1764] proved 07/01/1766. In the will he left £500 and an annuity of £25 p.a. to Peggy Paterson (eldest daughter of Gilbert Paterson of Dumfries), whom he had intended to marry; £250 to Annie Paterson, second daughter of Gilbert Paterson; £100 and an annuity of £25 p.a. to his mother Mrs Isobel McDowel residing in Kircudbright; an annuity of £30 p.a. to John Murray and Elizabeth Hassy his wife of Lockfergus [?] near Kircudbright, and £100 each to their children, as long as there were no more than five such children: 'to the excess of that number I leave nothing'; £200 to his cousin Archibald Malcom then living with him; £100 each to his partners Robert Young and James McIntosh; and £100 to his clerk William Donaldson. The partnership of Malcom Young & Co. by its articles was to dissolve 6 months after the death of any one partner, and the amount due to Malcom was to be paid to Gilbert Paterson, his General Executor and residuary legatee. Malcom went on to say that he had purchased three cotton plantations on Carriacou in his own name which nevertheless were the 'in partnership with my worthy friends John Mill and William Tod of London': under the terms of their agreement, the estates became the property of Mill and Tod on Malcom's death but, he said, the estates were now worth £3000 currency more than he paid for them by virtue of his labour, and he would leave it to Mill and Tod to decide whether to pay over £1000 [i.e. one-third of the increase in value] to his estate.
