Biography

Son of Sir Gillies Payne, father of Sir Charles Payne (q.v.). His title was the subject of controversy over the legitimacy or otherwise of his birth and that of his brother Sir Peter Payne (q.v.).

  1. Will of Sir John Payne of Tempsford Bedfordshire proved 31/08/1804. Under the will he rehearsed the annuity of £500 p.a. settled upon him and his first wife by his father Sir Gillies Payne (and secured on all Sir Gillies Payne's St Kitts estates other than Sandy Point) which annuity he [the testator] left in turn to his second son Coventry. His residuary estate went in trust for his son Charles.
