Biography

Buckingham landowner and MP, 'made speculative purchases of West Indian lands' [and presumably enslaved people there]. He reportedly lent money to Lauchlin Macleane (q.v.) secured on Macleane's speculative investment in Grenada property. Documents in the Archives at Claydon House show Ralph Verney lending money on mortgage to William Gray secured on the latter's Rhine plantation in Jamaica, a financial claim that descended to his niece and heir Baroness Fermanagh (q.v.).
