Biography

MP for Devizes 1818-1832, Blackwall Hall factor with his brother Brice Pearse (q.v.), and apparently one of group of five City men lending money c. 1830 in an unsuccessful effort to prop up Manning & Anderdon (q,v). Trustees for this group of men were awardee the compensation for the Spooners and Priddies Mornes estates on St Kitts.

His wife, Anne, who he married in c. 1786, was the daughter of John Phillimore, a silk merchant, of 15 New Broad Street, London. His father left over £30,000 and his father-in-law £35,000 to his wife and £15,000 to him.

He was a director of the Bank of England 1790-1, 1793-1808, 1812-28, deputy governor 1808-1810 and governor, 1810-1812. He was also manager, Sun Life Office 1788 until his death, director of Sun Fire Office 1791 and manager 1823 until is death. He was also governor of the Van Dieman’s Land Company from 1829 until his death.
