Biography

  1. Will of Samuel Proudfoot of Clapham Common Surrey proved 20/02/1797. In the will he left his property in Grenada and Dominica and elsewhere including that bequeathed to him by his brother Edmund Proudfoot in a will dated 13/11/1792 in trust to Gerard Montagu of Gunton [?] Hall Suffolk and Thomas Hurd now or late of Bermuda in HM's service as tenants in common subject to the legacies and charges placed on them in Edmund Proudfoot's will and to the charges placed by Samuel Proudfoot himself, including an annuity of £700 p.a. to his sister-in-law Sarah Abbis. After several monetary legacies of £200-500 each, and of £2500 to his friend Mr Barnard Gregory of Waxchandlers Hall, he left his residuary estate between Gerard Montagu and Elizabeth Hurd.

  2. There is a memorial to Samuel Proudfoot in the Vestry of All Hallows by the Tower Church (Byward Street,London EC3R 5BJ). The inscription reads: "In a Vault / Beneath this Aisle are deposited the Remains / of SAMEL PROUDFOOT, Esqr; / late of Clapham Common, Surry (sic) / Who died the 8th. February, 1797. / Aged 63 Years. / He was the last Survivor / of several Sons and Daughters of EDMUND PROUDFOOT, / formerly of this Parish, Merchant, deceased; / the Remains of whom, / and also of one of his Daughters, / are likewise deposited / in the same Vault."

  3. Messieurs Proudfoot were shown as present proprietors of St Andrews Lots nos. 43 and 44 (498 acres) in Dominica c. 1773.
