George Mathew

Son of Daniel Mathew of Felix Hall, brother of Daniel Byam Mathew and father of George Benvenuto Buckley-Mathew (all of whom q.v). Daniel Mathew of Felix Hall had left his son George his estates in Tobago and Antigua but revoked the bequest in 1776 and ordered the estates sold, with George receiving instead £10,000 and the purchase money for a lieutenancy in the Guards. Under the will of Archibald Cochran, George Mathew inherited an estate called Willoughby's on Antigua that has yet to be traced in the Slave Registers or the compensation records.

1. Will of George Mathew [formerly] of Dover [but late of the Canton of Aargau [?]] in Switzerland proved 14/10/1846. In the will he identified Charles Gambier and Frederick Gambier as his nephews. Under the will he said that he had settled on his [unnamed] son £24,000 in 3% reduced stock at the time of the latter's marriage, and left his son the remainder of his holding in that stock. His [unnamed] daughter was entitled to £5000 secured by £13,000 in 3% consols and he left her the whole holding held by trustees and all his own holding in the same stock. The two children received half of the cash at his bankers.
