Biography

London merchant, creditor of D.H. Rucker & Co., in which capacity he claimed the compensation for the Sharpe's and Petit Bordels estate on St Vincent, having taken in 1831 the mortgage deeds over the estates as security for a £7000 loan to the Ruckers, who were mortgagees of Michael White senior.

  1. Will of William Cooke otherwise William Hodges of Old Broad Street proved 04/01/1842. In the will, made in 1822, he said that his estate was worth £36,000 or £38,000, and left legacies on a sliding scale to his two sisters Maria Hodges and Elizabeth Jackson from £500 (if his gross estate was £30,000) to £2000 each (if his estate was £48,000 or more). He left annuities of £80 p.a., £50 p.a. and £25 p.a. to uncles and aunts (all surnamed Jackson). He left the remainder of his estate to his wife Sarah Frances Hodges, and in a codicil provided for the estate to be divided between his two sisters, his nephews (surnamed Cumberleye) and aunts and uncles, should his wife die at the same time as him or intestate. The probate gives him as late of Old Broad Street and of 15 Cumberland Terrace.

  2. His wife Sarah Frances Hodges left monetary legacies of £5000 each to four relatives as well as other smaller monetary legacies to family and friends and servants, and annuities of £25 for her two horses. Her residuary legatees were some dozen philanthropic bodies, including London hospitals and church charities.
