Biography

  1. Will of Anthony Gregg gentleman [formerly of the island of Barbados but now] of Hawkshead Lancashire [made in 1806] proved 13/05/1807. His estate was 'entirely personal', both in Barbados and England. He left legacies of several thousand pounds and annuities of totalling c. £200 p.a. to family members, and his residuary estate to his the children of his two brothers John Gregg and William Smarthwaite [sp?]. His legacy of £2000 to his 'son-in-law' [probably his stepson] John Frewin was subject to Frewin not contesting the will: if he did do his legacy was reduced to £5.

  2. There is a memorial to him in the church of St Michael and All Angels Hawkshead: 'To the memory of Anthony Gregg M.D. This tablet is inscribed by the gratitude of his relatives In the deepest sense and most cherished remembrance Of his generous nature and amiable qualities. He completed an active, useful and respectable life The XXIV day of March MDCCCVII Aged LXXVIII years.'
