Biography

Slave-owner on St Kitts and Nevis by his marriage to his wife Penelope nee Yonge, a descendant of the Stapleton family; church pluralist, Dean of St Asaph, with an entry in the ODNB. Son of Jonathan Shipley, bishop of St Asaph.

  1. Rev. William Davies Shipley, MA, Dean and Chancellor of St Asaph married Penelope Yonge in April 1777. Penelope was the daughter of Ellis and Penelope Yonge of Bryn Iorcyn, Flintshire, and Acton Hall, Denbighshire. The elder Penelope was the daughter of James Russell Stapleton and his wife - also named Penelope, who was the daughter of Sir John Conway, the last male heir of a family derived from the ancient seat of the Conways of Prestatyn and Bodrhyddan. Their eldest son, Colonel William Shipley, is said to have been killed whilst out shooting at Hyeres in the south of France by the accidental discharge of his servant's gun.
