Biography

Hastings Elwin or Elwyn served as one of the paid Commissioners of Compensation and was himself party to the Chancery suit of Pulsford v Elwin, into which was paid the compensation for the enslaved people on Cooks and Union estates on Antigua. He was identified in the Slave Registers for both these estates as the acting executor of Langford Lovell Hodge of Antigua (q.v.).

Elwin is the subject of an outstanding 2005 article which includes much biographical detail and an indication of his cultural legacies in Britain, The life and times of Hastings Elwin or Elwyn (1777-1852) and his critical role in the founding of the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution in 1823.
