Biography

Son and heir of Edward Pennant (d. 1736) and father of Richard Pennant (1737-1808). Married the Jamaican heiress Bonella Hodges in 1734. Inherited further property from his brother Samuel in 1750. Of Saville Row, London, when Samuel wrote his will in 1749. Moved to England shortly after his father's death. Lived in Hanover Square from at least 1762.

John Pennant was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 2956 acres of land in Clarendon. John Henry Pennant and the estate of Samuel Pennant was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 2190 acres of land in Westmoreland.

John Pennant of St George, Hanover Square.

My freehold messuage or tenement in Hanover Square to my son Richard Pennant.

The stable and coachhouse behind my messuage which I hold by lease from the Mayor, and all my property in Wales and all my estates and plantation in Jamaica (subject to the payment of the annuities hereinafter mentioned) to my son Richard Pennant but upon special trust that in case he shall have no lawful issue that these properties should pass to William Gale of Grafton Street in St George's Hanover Square and John Kirke of Clarendon in Jamaica and William Atherton of Trelawney in Jamaica upon trust for George Hay Dawkins, the second son of my nephew Henry Dawkins or other such son of my said nephew as shall happen at the time being to be his second son, and for Edward Gregory Morant, the second son of my nephew, to be equally divided between them. The trust to then continue to the first son of them etc. Beneficiaries to take the surname Pennant.

To Mrs Harriett Anm[?] an annuity of £80 per annum until she shall be married, chargeable on my plantations in Jamaica and Wales.

£100 a year to be applied for the education and support of a boy commonly called Charles Smith otherwise Charles Ann[?] aged about 7 years and now residing at Burket Hill near Chigwell, Essex under the tuition of the said Harriot Ann his mother until he reaches the age of 16. Then or soon afte he shall be sent to one of the universities or to such profession as he shall choose and from that time be allowed £200 a year in lieu of the said £100 until age 21. From then after an annuity of £500 per annum for life so long as my son Richard Pennant and the heirs of his body shall possess my estates and plantations in Wales and Jamaica. Should my son Richard Pennant die without issue of his body during the lifetime of Charles Smith then I bequeath unto Charles Smith an annuity of £1,200 sterling in lieu of the £500 annuity. Half of this annuity to be charged upon my estates in Wales and the other hald on my plantations in Jamaica. My son Richard Pennant to be guardian of Charles Smith or Charles Ann during his minority; should my son die before Charles Smith reaches the age of 21 then William Gale, John Shickle and William Atherton to be guardians.

To my sister Sarah Rodon £200.

To my servants Elizabeth Ratcliffe and Joseph Sykes £20 each for mourning. All my wearing apparel to Joseph Sykes.

To Mrs Grari[?] [?]son £20 for mourning.

To my servants James Abbot Bernard Martin and William DSun £12 each for mourning and to my servants Robert Nicholson and Sarah Wilkinson £10 each for mourning.

All my personal estate, subject to the payments of the above legacies, to my son Richard Tennant.

My son to be executor.
