John Denis Browne, 1st Marquis of Sligo

Biography

Son of John Browne, 2nd Earl of Altamont, and his wife Elizabeth nee Kelly, only child and heiress of Dennis Kelly of Jamaica. Educated at Eton, Sheriff of Co. Mayo, 1779, MP for Jamestown 1776-1780. Created Marquis of Sligo 31/12/1800.

  1. 'He created the lake to the West of Westport House and planted trees. He laid out the principal streets of the present town of Westport. He also established a theatre at the Octagon and built the town of Louisburgh.'
