Biography

Bought Aberly estate in St Ann, Jamaica, from James Wilson c. 1823 and Richardsfield, also in St Ann, from Thomas Willis before 1825. He described himself as a gentleman of Kirkby Lonsdale when he wrote his will in 1835. When he died c. 1838, he left his estates to his brothers John (Aberly) and Jonathan (Richardsfield), together with the services of the apprentices attached to each of them. The compensation for the enslaved people on Aberly and Aboukir was paid to the London merchant John Bloxam Elin (q.v.), the executor and trustee of the mortgagee John Howlett.

Richard Briggs of Kirkby Lonsdale gent

This is the last will & testament of me Richard Briggs of Kirkby Lonsdale gent. I give & devise my copyhold or customary closes of Land called Cow Close and Sour Flat situated in the Manor of Casterton to my brother John Briggs subject to the payment of all fines etc

I give all my estate or plantation or plantation called Aberly cont c 510 acres situate in the parish of Saint Ann in the Island of Jamaica which I purchased of one James Wilson and all the unexpired Term of the Apprentices attached to the above or any other estate belonging to me in the said Island and all utensils implements and appurtenances upon or belonging to the said premises unto my said brother John Briggs his heirs etc {(subject to all mortgages etc affecting the same)

I give and devise all my estate or plantation called Richardsfield cont about 300 acres situate in the said parish of Saint Ann in the Island of Jamaica which I purchased of Thomas Willis and all utensils and appurtenaces (excepting the apprentices) upon or belonging to the said premises unto my brother Jonathan Briggs his heirs etc (subject to all mortgages etc )

And as to all the rest and residue of my real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever and all sums of money to which I am entitled as a compensation for all the negroes and slaves belonging to me (subject to the payment of my just debts – mortgage on Richardsfield to be paid by Jonathan only excepted) I give to my said brother John Briggs whom I appoint sole executor
